Transformation as Continuity
Set within the steep landscape of Ponta do Sol, the project approaches the existing Madeiran dwelling not as an object to be reconstructed, but as the foundation for a new architecture shaped by memory, climate and the Atlantic horizon. Retained perimeter walls preserve traces of the original house, while a new rhythm of cross-laminated timber walls extends across the site, projecting towards the ocean and establishing a dialogue between permanence and lightness. These walls become both structure and architectural language, providing shelter from wind and intense sunlight, framing views, defining privacy and guiding movement from mountain to sea.
A restrained palette of timber, volcanic anthracite tones, glass and mineral surfaces connects the architecture to Madeira’s rugged geology, while an underlying Japanese sensibility introduces precision, adaptability and quietness. Spaces unfold gradually through gardens, filtered light and carefully framed views, dissolving the boundaries between interior and landscape. Conceived as a personal setting for living, art and memory, the house integrates the owner’s collections into the architecture, allowing objects and spaces to become part of a continuous domestic narrative. Rooted in Madeira yet shaped by a meeting of cultures, Santullo Villa proposes an architecture of continuity, preserving memory without nostalgia and finding contemporary luxury in simplicity, craftsmanship and an intimate connection with the landscape.
