A Leap Towards the Atlantic
Madeira’s dramatic topography, where volcanic slopes descend steeply towards the Atlantic, becomes the defining force behind an architecture conceived between ground and horizon. Inspired by the structural clarity of the modernist diving board, the house is firmly anchored to the terrain while simultaneously projecting towards the sea. A sequence of strong horizontal planes cascades down the hillside, creating deep cantilevers that frame expansive views, provide shade and form sheltered outdoor rooms.
The architecture responds directly to the island’s climate: expansive glazing opens the principal spaces towards the south and the ocean, while more solid elevations offer protection from prevailing winds and provide greater privacy. This dialogue between openness and enclosure is reinforced through a restrained palette of exposed timber, pigmented concrete, glass and dark metal, balancing the geological weight of Madeira with the apparent lightness of the projecting structure.
Rather than simply occupying the site, the architecture becomes an extension of the landscape, with terraces, gardens, water and interiors forming a continuous sequence between mountain and sea. Poised between solidity and suspension, shelter and exposure, Wenninger Villa emerges as an inhabited landscape, deeply anchored to Madeira yet constantly reaching towards the Atlantic horizon.
